Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) levels are often used to assess a woman’s ovarian reserve, which can be an indicator of fertility. Egg donors will be tested for AMH as part of the egg donor screening process. If the number is too low, then a donor is often disqualified.
While it’s difficult to significantly increase AMH levels since they are largely determined by genetics and age, there are some strategies that may help support overall ovarian health:
1. Healthy Diet:
Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats can support hormonal balance. Some studies suggest that foods high in antioxidants, such as berries and green leafy vegetables, may be beneficial.
2. Supplements:
Certain supplements, such as DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10), and vitamin D, have been studied for their potential to improve ovarian function. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting any supplements.
3. Regular Exercise:
Moderate physical activity can help maintain a healthy weight and improve overall health, which may indirectly support ovarian function.
4. Stress Reduction:
Stress can negatively affect hormone levels. Practices such as meditation, yoga, and mindfulness can help reduce stress.
5. Avoid Smoking and Excessive Alcohol:
Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can negatively impact ovarian reserve and hormone levels.
6. Medical Treatments:
In some cases, fertility treatments and medications prescribed by a fertility specialist might be considered to help improve ovarian function.
7. Acupuncture:
Some studies suggest that acupuncture may have a positive effect on fertility and ovarian health, although more research is needed.
8. Birth control:
Research suggests that hormonal birth control may affect AMH levels. But it depends on the type of birth control. Always consult with a healthcare provider or a fertility specialist to discuss your individual situation and the best strategies for you.
